Bo3 (best of three) in CS2, defined

A Bo3 is a best-of-three series — the first team to win two maps wins the match.

It is the standard playoff format in professional Counter-Strike, chosen because a single map is noisy: map-specific strength, side starts, and one hot player can decide a Bo1. Requiring two maps materially reduces that variance without demanding the time of a Bo5.

A Bo3 is played out of a map veto: the two teams take turns banning maps, each picks one — usually its strongest — and a decider is left over. So the third map, when a series reaches it, is very often the one neither team wanted, and where preparation matters least. Teams pour their prep into their own pick, so a Bo3 rewards the side with the broader, deeper map pool: the one that can still win an unfamiliar decider. That is why a Bo3 tests map-pool depth in a way a Bo1 never does.

You will also see Bo1 in group stages and open qualifiers, where the schedule is tight and the variance is simply accepted, and Bo5 reserved for grand finals — formats labelled on any professional match listing. Format is a field on every fixture, because treating a Bo1 and a Bo3 identically misprices both: an upset over a single map is far more likely than one over three between the same two teams.

How it is measured: a fixture carries its format, and per-map scores resolve the series. Roughly 19,176 series in our data have a recorded decider map, though that figure spans Bo3 and Bo5 alike, so read it as "series that went the distance," not as a Bo3 count.
